My House in Pictures

Now I am just going to come out and admit it. I am not a great drawer....heck I'm not even a good drawer. The following pictures are my best efforts of giving you all a glimpse into my childhood home and maybe even into the way I think. Remember I warned you that drawing is not my strong suit at all!!!!! Thus why I decided Engineering would be a very very bad idea....plus it had a lot more math than Literature. Because trust me that did factor into my decision!!!!
The picture above is my house as a whole. Now I don't have a scanner so I took pictures of my drawings and then uploaded them to my computer. I start on the steps and then go to the porch to Clio then to the kitchen to Callipe. After Calliope, I go to the Dining room to Urania & Thalia. After seeing Thalia, I visit Euterpe in the Kitchen playing on the stereo. After jamming out with her, I go dance with Terpsichore in the Dining Room. Next is Erator on the couch, Melpomene on the recliner, and Polyhymnia sitting on the floor in the Living room. The key to the side signifies the different aspects of my house such as doors, windows, and open areas that seperate various rooms such as the kitchen and dining room and the dining room and the living room. The following drawings are more closeups of each individual room. Including my room which doesn't have to do with the muses but that I described in a blog earlier this evening. Enjoy and welcome to Casa Cooley!

The Repercussions of Flyting

Professor Sexson asked us to describe the flyting experiences of our life so here it goes. Please do not judge me too harshly after reading this blog. I swear he started it EVERY time.
As some of you may know, I grew up on a small ranch in Eastern Montana. What you may not know is that I have a younger brother who was born a mere 15 months after me. Growing up in a small town with very few kids forced my brother, JE and I to share a lot of friends which put us into constant contact. We often fought as children....actually we still do fight like children. However, it rarely stays at just insults unless we are fighting via the phone, texting, or even sometimes Facebook. We often resorted to much physically violence that sometimes did involve cow poop or calf testicles. Disgusting I know but what can you do???? However, I think most of you will appreciate me not going into great detail about these particular events. The following is a list of insults that were common in the Cooley Household

  • idiot
  • twerp
  • being adopt
  • retard
  • dweeb
  • dummy
  • having a brain
  • stupid
  • tattle-tale
  • doody-head
  • baby
  • he often made fun of my inability to talk correctly (I had a bad lisp)
I am sure there are many many more that we called each other but I doubt that they pass the PG requirement of our class. Furthermore, after we had exhausted this list of insults, we were probably at the fighting/pranking stage of our fight until Mom or Dad broke it up.
The following is a blog that I did last spring for Professor Sexson Shakespeare class on flyting. I hope that it entertains and amuses all of you. But remember if you are going to judge me harshly you aren't allowed to read on!

Pitchforks and Flyting: A dangerous combination!

I will just come straight out and admit it: I was a horrible older sister when I was younger. I have one younger brother and we are only about 15 months apart. Not only are we very close in age but we are also very similar in personality. We both are very competitive and like to be in charge. This often led to much fighting as children. I usually won but am now paying for it. The best and funniest memory I have of us fighting happened when we were around 12 and 11 years old (approximately)
J.E. and I grew up in small town Montana on a ranch. As ranch children we were expected to do chores everyday. During March -May these chores included mucking out sheep, horse, and cattle stalls. One day we were out there working and being older, I finished my half first. Instead of being a nice older sister and helping JE, I decided to just stand there and watch him work. This of course started a fight, which was probably my intention. After he started complaining, I told him it was fair because I shouldn't have to do more work since I was our parents only actual child thus implying he was adopted (he definitely isn't; he is the spitting image of our father). However, I was around for his birth so I obviously have authority even though I was only like a year and a half when he was born! Thus started the insults. I do not remember exactly where they progressed to but I do remember dancing around making a song out of the words "JE is adopted" over and over again. Talk about the song that never ended. Finally he was getting mad enough that I would hide and then sing from my hiding place. My final hiding place was a wooden wind break in the coral by where we were supposed to be working. I would pop my head up and sing then duck down to avoid the snow/mud/whatever he could find that was thrown at me. The last time that I popped up and ducked down, a pitchfork came flying over the windbreak. Good thing that I wasn't in the way!! That ended the fight. I would definitely say that JE won that round. Oh well I won many many more over the years. Even though since we have grown, he now wins more often. Last Christmas, I started a fight and he hog tied me and left me tied up unable to move for about half of an hour. Anyways I digress on that tangent. My point is that rarely are the insults of a fight remembered between siblings except when they are lead to hilarious memories. We have many many memories such as the one above. Whenever extravagant flyting occurs though the fight usually ends in laughter because the insults become so outrageous that they are more funny than mean. This is not the case in King Lear unless one is the person reading the play. Then one remembers one's own experiences of flyting. My brother and I often still flyt. Why just last week we got into a fight over facebook comments and started exchanging insults over wall posts. This gave much amusement to our friends and family. I guess even though lots of years have passed, one never outgrows the enjoyment of fighting with one's siblings. In fact after thinking about all of this "fun" we have had over the years, I am truly looking forward to Spring Break and picking a fight with JE. Watch out little brother. It is going to be on like Donkey Kong over Spring Break!!

My Childhood Bedroom

I have put off describing my bedroom as we were supposed to do a few weeks ago for one reason and one reason alone, which is that my room is always a DISASTER!!!! I am not the cleanest person when in my childhood room. So I have spent the last couple of weeks cleaning my room in my mind, which is barely more fun than cleaning my room in real life! Now that it is finally clean, I don't feel so bad showing it to the world. So here we go!
When you first walk into Casa Jennifer, to your left you will see two book shelves, where I have organized my favorite authors on the top shelves with the lesser loved one farther down. However when you look at this shelves you will see what looks like mass confusion to anyone but me. You see I have too many books to fit them all on the shelves unless, I double up books on each shelf. Even by doing that I have to have another bookshelf to hold all of my prized possessions.
Looking past my bookshelves, is my brown recliner that I won at my senior graduation party, which seems like a lifetime ago. Past that is dresser with its four drawers sitting in the corner. There is nothing extraordinary about this dresser except that upon it sits various pictures and momentos from my life.
We next have my green hope chest sitting under the window. This chest contains all of the possessions that summarize my life's big moments. For example it holds my high school graduation diploma and cap & gown among other things.
Beside my hope chest is a set of 8 multicolored drawers that hold anything from hair supplies to bank statements. Next in the line up is my HIDEOUS green desk. I honestly have no idea where I got this desk. Probably from one of my mom's rental houses. It has a top long drawer that random stuff gets thrown into and then two side drawers, which both hold beauty supplies. On this desks sets, my jewelry stands, coin jars, my TV, and random makeup supplies. Beside this hideous monstrosity is my standing makeup mirror.
The biggest item in my room is next. Needless to say this is my bed. On my bed is a multitude of pillows, blankets, and books. I tend to read and reread a lot of books and fall asleep with them in my bed. The cover blanket is my graduation present from my grandma, which is quilt made of picture of my childhood, teenage years, and family. It is one of the most precious things in my life as it holds all my memories. At the foot of my bed is my closet which basically is never opened unless I'm quickly shoving more stuff in there. My closet is probably a safety hazard even as a memory palace so it will never be used for anything except a type of garbage disposal. Beside my closet is my 3rd bookshelf!! The top 2 shelves hold books of various subjects doubled up to make enough room. The bottom two shelves hold various articles of clothing. On top of this piece of furniture sits more pictures and childhood memorabilia. The last piece of furniture is a desk that my mom wanted out of the rest of the house and so stored it in my room. On it sits our old dinasour of a Desktop computer that needs to be cleaned up.
That is an overview of my room so now I will give you a few more details. My room is painted various shades of purple, which happened as a reward for graduating the 8th grade with a 4.0 GPA. One my walls hang various pictures and paintings.

The picture above sits right over my bed. This painting used to hang in my father's mother's room before she passed when I was much younger. I could spend hours staring at this painting as it represented so many possibilities to my childlike mind. Now as a connection to my grandmother it hangs in my room as it did in hers.
Also on my walls are various awards from both high school and college. As well as our family portrait from about 10 years ago.
I have taken you around the edges of my room and the walls. In the middle of my room is a bunch of bare blue carpet space. On this space usually rests piles of clothing. That is pretty much all you need to know about my childhood bedroom.

Architectural Structure of Memory Palaces

After class on Monday, I met up with Autumn to explain the origins of her new name as I was the one who came up with it. However, I felt the need to explain to everyone so no one thought she was named Autumn of the Tragedies as a reflection of her personality. As I am sure any of you who have taken a Sexson class before is aware, he loves to assign Frye as one of the reading assignments. I have previously blogged about this particular author in different classes, both in complaint and in admiration. After the first time reading Frye, it was almost always in complete admiration. In fact my love of this author has gone so far as that I have bough several of his books to read in my spare time. My family finds this to be a little excessive! My litter brother especially made fun of me for reading Literary Criticism during my winter break! However, I digress. That is not the point of this blog. The facts that I am trying to convey is the significance of Autumn as a season and how it is incorporated into Frye's conception of the literary world. Autumn signifies the tragedies to that wonderful wonderful man. Each season has a significant meaning that creates archetypes in literature. I believe that this relates to the Oral Traditions because archetypes are just a form of repetition that allow the oral stories to perpetuate in their entirety.

Phases of Tragedy

1. Complete innocence: The hero who is dignified because of her innocence and courage is toppled; the hero is often a female in this phase

2. Youthful innocence of inexperience: The heroes and heroines are often young people first encountering the realities of adulthood; frequently a central character will survive so that the action closes with an adjustment to mature experience

3. Completion of an ideal: The success or completion of hero’s achievement is essential despite his tragic end, and a sense of serenity or peace often exists after his death because of his final accomplishment; these tragedies are commonly a sequel to a previous tragic event

4. Individual’s faults: The hero moves from innocence to experience with his fall occurring as a result of hybris and hamartia

5. Natural law: Natural law becomes prominent in these stories, overshadowing the hero and allowing the audience to look down on the action; this phase includes any of the existential and fatalistic tragedies that deal more with metaphysical and theological questions rather than social or moral ones

6. World of shock and horror: These stories possess a strong element of demonic ritual in public punishments and depict a hero in such deep agony or humiliation that they cannot achieve a heroic pose; cannibalism, mutilation, and torture are frequently present in this phase

If anyone wants more information on the archetypes that Frye has given us for the genres of literature, here is a link: http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/dherring/ap/consider/frye/indexfryeov.htm

As you can see, the tools that we use to understand literature will also help us remember it. If we go by the list that I have included above, it can help reinforce the structure of our memory palaces. This is vital because as anyone knows, if a building is not properly reinforced it will collapse and be unsafe. The same can be said of all memory palaces when dealing with literature and not just the memorization of lists and the like. We need to have the background in literary tools to completely build our palaces to last for a long time.

Monday, January 23, 2012

The assignment for this weekend was figure out how to remember the 9 muses using a memory theater. Well let me tell you, I have had a hard time with this one. I just couldn't seem to get the muses to stick in mind! I have even tried to use various memory systems. And nothing worked. I just couldn't seem to get a story to flow through my mind that helped me remember. Then I realized what my solution could be. Instead of making up a story why didn't I just recreate one. Instead of using new faces for the muses, I could give their names to faces I already knew.
To start out recreating my story, I decided to use my childhood home on my ranch in Jordan, MT. When you walk in the front door is our porch. A little stool that I made in shop class as junior sits inside the door. Sitting on the stool is Cleopatra who uses the nickname Clio. She is reading scrolls of history but she has to do it in the porch because her sisters are being too loud in the rest of the house.
After seeing Clio, I turn to my right and walk into the kitchen. At the counter is Calliope, reading the Illiad on her new Ipod Tablet. I picture her having my curly hair as all through high school that is where I could be found while my friends were out partying!
Next is Urania. Here I picture as my Astronomy professor at MSU. She is looking through a new telescope outside the new bench windows my mom put in this past summer.
Looking past Urania, I see Thalia, who looks like a young girl in punk clothing, which is an image I have taken from Percy Jackson series (my favorite books at the moment!). Thalia is over by our game area arguing with Adam Sandler about which games would be the funnies to play.
Looking back into the kitchen, I see Euterpe, who looks identical to my friend Cerissa who played the flute all through our years in pep band, cranking up her ipod on the sound system that we have in the corner. She is holding her flute but she just can't play loud enough to drown out the noise of Thalia & Adam. So instead she is busting out some Lady Gaga Remixes.
Near her in the dining room, I actually see Lady Gaga as Terpsichore breaking out some killer dance moves. She has on this crazy outfit which consists of neon green leotard that has Terpsichore spelled out in HOT PINK.
Next in the living room, I see Erato on the couch making out with Ryan Reynolds. I picture myself as Erato because really who wouldn't want to be making out with Ryan Reynolds! The two are oblivious to everything including the fact that they are laying on Erato's lyre!
In the recliner is Melpmene crying because Erato stole Ryan from her. She is wailing about her lost love. She is the main reason that the rest of her sisters are either in different rooms altogether or else have their music cranked up as loud as it can go.
And last but not least I see Polyhymnia sitting criss-cross apple sauce on the floor of the living room meditating  and humming some hymns. This way she is able to block out all the noise and with a veil on her face she is able to block out all visuals of the wild antics her sisters have gotten up to!
After walking through this scenario a few times, I really think that it is going to be helpful to picture the muses as people I already know as that makes more associations in my mind and makes them more memorable. I mean I don't think I would ever forget having the opportunity to spend time with Ryan Reynolds! Now that I got this down, its time to start moving on to the tribes of Jacob. I wonder what celebrities I will be able to come up for them....

Binomial Nomenclature

The first blog entry is always the most intimidating to me. This blog that I am writing will set the bar for the rest of the semester. So as I'm sitting here trying to think of something to say that is impressive and that sounds pretty intelligent, I am coming to a complete blank. Not the best way to start the semester! All I can think of is binomial nomenclature. That is the weird thing with the memory. Yesterday when Professor Sexson suggested that my name be binomial nomenclature, which I figured had to do with being left handed. Boy was I wrong! Now that I know what it means, it still does nothing to help me come up with an epithet for my group members nor does it help me think of something to write that is going to be impressive.
Since I'm thinking of nothing of monumental importance to write about, you are just going to have to bear with me while I work through all the random thoughts that go  through my head while Sexson is lecturing. And believe me there are a lot. First of all, listening to all my classmates goals of using their memory for something more than just passing this class, I decided that I needed to have a goal for the semester. Something that will encourage me to really make my own memory palaces that I will enjoy using. The items that I wish to memorize as a goal is all of the Greek gods, their Roman counterparts, and their attributes. Most people would probably say that this is not really something that will be useful in the future but over the past few years, I have fallen in love with Greek mythology. And I figure the best way to get good at building memory palaces is to memorize something that interests me and that I draw connections from in all literature that I read. After becoming so immersed in Greek mythology I see its influence in all literature. However, I have a hard time remembering the names in various stories, which is kind of embarrassing because I usually know the story. After deciding my goal, I had to figure out what building I want to use as my memory palace. As you may or may not know, I am in a sorority. And if you haven't been in a sorority house, let me tell you they are usually really big with a lot of rooms. So for my memory palace I am going to use my sorority house and then when my house is filled, I plan to move on to the others on campus and even go so far as to research other houses around the United States. I figure the only way to get really good at building memory palaces is to use a building that has significance to yourself and then become better at memory by actually enjoying walking through it. Now I'm not sure if this was an impressive or very intellectual sounding blog but it showed how thinking about one thing can lead the brain to jump from one idea to the next. So Professor Sexson, maybe I would like to have my epithet for the semester to be binomial nomenclature because it will remind me of my mission.
